What Happens During an ABA Assessment?

If your child has recently been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or you’ve received an ABA written order (PA) or referral for ABA services (NJ), you may be wondering what happens during an ABA assessment. The good news is that an ABA assessment is not a test your child can pass or fail. Instead, it’s the first step in creating a personalized ABA therapy plan designed around your child’s unique strengths, needs, and goals.

Is my child going to have to take a test during the ABA assessment?

An ABA assessment is less of a test and more like taking a glimpse into child’s current abilities and needs. An ABA assessment is part of an insurance required process where our qualified clinicians gather comprehensive information through reports, interviews, and direct observation to determine if intensive ABA services are clinically recommended. The clinician will observe your child’s communication, play, social interaction, daily living skills, and behaviors through fun, age-appropriate activities.

Your child may spend time playing, interacting with the clinician, practicing simple tasks, or participating in familiar routines that provide a natural picture of their strengths and areas where they may benefit from support. The clinician then develops a comprehensive summary of the assessment along with recommendations that will include individualized program goals if ABA services are clinically recommended.

What will I need to do as a parent during the ABA assessment?

Parents and caregivers play a vital role in the ABA assessment because you know your child better than anyone. During the assessment, the clinician will rely on your insights to gain a comprehensive understanding of your child’s developmental, medical, social, and educational history, family structure, cultural background, strengths, interests, preferences, developmental milestones, behaviors, and the goals that matter most to your family. Your perspective is invaluable because no one knows your child better than you. Your insight helps the clinician develop an individualized therapy plan that reflects your child’s unique needs and supports your family’s daily routines and priorities.

How long does an ABA assessment usually take?

ABA assessments are performed in stages and typically take up to 30 days to complete. During the first 7-10 days, the clinician conducts caregiver interviews, reviews relevant records, and completes observations in various settings to develop a comprehensive understanding of your child’s strengths, needs, and current skills. This process helps ensure that recommendations are individualized, meaningful and aligned with both your child’s unique needs and your family’s priorities.

If ABA services are recommended, the clinician prepares an assessment summary and individualized treatment plan. The assessment and recommendations are reviewed by a clinical director to ensure they are appropriate and and meet the highest standards of clinical quality. We also review them with you and your family to make sure the information is clear and that you feel comfortable with the recommendations. Once your family reviews the findings and we answer any of your questions, the assessment and treatment plan are submitted to your insurance provider for authorization.

What happens after my child’s ABA assessment is finished?

If services are recommended, our team will submit the full report to your insurance provider for authorization before ongoing ABA therapy begins. Once approved, your care team will work with you to begin therapy with a behavior technician and clinician based on a mutually agreeed-upon schedule. Your clinician will walk you through each step of beginning treatment to help you feel comfortable and confident in your understanding of what to expect as treatment begins and progresses.

The assessment is just the beginning of your family’s ABA journey.

Every child is different, which is why every assessment leads to individualized recommendations based on your child’s strengths, needs, and developmental goals.
